The University of Ruhuna, the brainchild of Hon. Ronnie de Mel, MP and former Minister of Finance and Planning, was founded in 1978 at Meddawatta, Matara in the premises of the Technical College at Matara as the Ruhuna University College. A new building programme at the main campus at Wellamadama was designed by the world-renowned architect Geoffery Bawa and was constructed by a leading Dutch company Ballast Nedam at a cost of about Rs 900 million. The University has rapidly progressed over the last two decades and now has emerged as one of the leading universities in Sri Lanka with five Faculties and about 450 academics and over 6000 students. The University will be completing 25 years in 2003 with many achievements to its credit and will hold its silver jubilee celebrations, which will include a host of events, including exhibitions, seminars, workshop, competitions, cultural festivals, carnivals, talent shows by students and alumni etc.
