Nilwala River Community-University Alliance for Resilience (NU-CARE)

Department of Geography, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Ruhuna

Community members who live in the Nilwala River basin in the Matara area experienced an intense and ongoing flood hazard from 2023, particularly during the inter-monsoon period, following just after the end of the northeast monsoon. This inundation significantly impacted a wide ecological zone on both sides of the river, destroying paddy fields and various crops. After preliminary discussion, a request was made to the Department of Geography, University of Ruhuna to carry out an experimental intervention regarding this situation by the farming community facing the threat of flood in the Nilwala river valley. Consequently, a study committee, including Senior Professor Saman Chandana, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Ruhuna, and Professor GPTS Hemakumara,  the Head of the Department, Department of Geography,  conducted an observational visit to the relevant Nilwala River valley areas on December 31, 2023, to initiate a preliminary study. Building upon these observations, the Department of Geography at Ruhuna University aims to launch an extensive research program with a focus on community development objectives.

Initiating change: “Wings of Brotherhood” at the University of Ruhuna

Against the backdrop of ethnic diversity and the prevailing need for unity, the University of Ruhuna (UoR) has undertaken a pioneering initiative called "Wings of Brotherhood." This transformative project organized by the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences unfolded as students from Jaffna embarked on a remarkable five-day visit to the University of Ruhuna, creating a platform for cultural exchange, understanding, and camaraderie.

The essence of "Wings of Brotherhood" lies in its commitment to breaking down barriers and fostering genuine connections between students from different ethnic backgrounds. To achieve this, the participating Jaffna students were warmly accommodated in university hostels, where they shared living spaces with their Sinhala counterparts. This intentional arrangement aimed to create an immersive experience, allowing students to engage on a personal level and dispel any preconceived notions.

Throughout the five-day program, a diverse array of activities was meticulously organized to encourage interaction and cultural exchange. Beyond the confines of the classroom, students participated in collaborative projects, discussions, and recreational activities, forging bonds that extended beyond ethnic boundaries. The sharing of meals became a communal experience, providing a setting where conversations flowed freely, fostering mutual understanding.

One of the highlights of the initiative was a cultural show held at the culmination of the program. The event, graced by the presence of the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor, and esteemed academic and student attendees, showcased the richness of both Jaffna and Ruhuna cultures. Through music, dance, and various artistic expressions, the students celebrated their diversity while emphasizing the shared values that bind them together.

The success of "Wings of Brotherhood" resonated with the palpable joy and satisfaction expressed by both groups of students. The genuine connections formed during this initiative not only bridged ethnic divides but also laid the foundation for lasting friendships. The program underscored the University of Ruhuna's commitment to being a catalyst for positive change, utilizing education and cultural exchange as powerful tools to foster unity and understanding among its student body.

As the echoes of laughter and the memories of shared experiences linger, "Wings of Brotherhood" stands as a testament to the transformative power of initiatives that seek to build bridges across cultural and ethnic divides within educational institutions, contributing to a more harmonious and interconnected society.
