Animal Source Food at the Medicare 2024 Healthy Living Expo - BMICH

The BMICH hosted the Medicare 2024 - Health Living Expo from March 1st to 3rd, 2024. On an invitation from the World's Poultry Science Association - Sri Lanka Branch (WPSA-SL), the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna had a joint-stall with WPSA-SL on the benefits of chicken meat and eggs as a source rich in bioavailable proteins. The WPSA-SL is the leading association for all the professionals engaged in the Sri Lankan poultry industry. The stall aimed at educating the public to avoid myths and misconceptions associated with chicken meat and eggs to promote poultry products as a relatively cheaper animal source food. The participation of the Department of Animal Science garnered a significant interest, drawing a massive crowd eager to learn more about poultry products and their role in a balanced diet. This was facilitated by a team of students from the Department of Animal Science, led by Prof. Indunil Pathirana and Dr. C.J. Gajaweera with the support of Prof. Anton Perera and other fellow staff members. Mr. Oshan Gunawardena had the operational leadership of the student group, with the assistance of Miss. Chanole Colonne. Attendees were involved in several educational activities which included a quiz, a demonstration of different types of eggs available in the market, on-site training on meat processing and poster discussions on various topics of interest. The selected group of attendees had the opportunity to learn practical tips and to get hands-on experience in preparing meatballs using chicken meat and natural ingredients. Furthermore, Prof. Indunil Pathirana joined an expert panel discussion chaired by Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva on “Lifestyle Modification and Maintaining Wellness” which was open to the public. The University of Ruhuna completed a successful community project with the financial support of WPSA-SL, both the Chief Organizer, Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva and the public appreciated the effort of team UoR.
