Ph.D. in Blue Carbon Science
Applications are invited from highly qualified prospective candidates to enroll for a research project leading to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Blue Carbon Science. All project activities will be conducted at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Vrije Universiteit, Brussels, Belgium, Department of Botany, University of Ruhuna and Faculty of Technology, Eastern University Sri Lanka.
This project comes under the “Social-Ecological Dynamics in Rapid Economic Development: Infrastructure and coastal Change in South and Eastern Sri Lanka (FSPI-SEDRIC@Sri Lanka)” and funded by the French cooperation under the supervision of the French Embassy at Colombo and ICA (International Coordination Action) at Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek –
Vlaanderen (FWO) based at the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, University of Ruhuna.
Project Description:
This project mainly focuses on determining the role of edaphic factors on blue carbon stability. Thereby, the study aims at broadening the understanding of role of blue carbon stocks in climate change mitigation.
Duration: Four years (Full-time)

Qualifications:
⮚ Should have B.Sc. Special degree in Botany OR Coastal Ecology with a first class or a second upper division from a recognized university
⮚ M.Phil. Degree (or M.Sc.) related to Plant Ecology/Environmental Science/Coastal Ecology from a recognized university will be given the priority
∙ Candidates who have completed M.Phil. degree in one of the aforementioned categories will also be considered
⮚ Field experience on Blue Carbon Science and having publications related to blue carbon science will be considered as additional qualifications
⮚ Having sufficient knowledge in Biostatistics including multivariate techniques/GLM, Remote Sensing and GIS would be beneficial
⮚ Should be proficient in English language (scientific writing and communication) Application procedure:

Allowance: Rs. 75,000/= per month (flight tickets, accommodation during the stay in Belgium will also be covered)

Period:
Each year, 03 months in Belgium and 09 months in Sri Lanka during the first three years 06 months in Sri Lanka and 06 months in Belgium during the 4th year (thesis defense) All the field works are carried out in Sri Lanka
Bond agreement:
A bond agreement will be signed between University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka and the selected candidates for the period of four years.
